Donald Trump’s twitter handle breathed life into yet another controversy as he asked Israel to stay strong till he comes into power on Jan 20th 2017.
The latest tweets, which came in just hours ago, were vehement in support of Israel, a very important US ally, and criticized the United Nations for passing a resolution condemning Israeli settlements on the disputed territories of the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
Although the decision to not “Veto” the UN resolution by the United States, was highly surprising to many political critics and commentators in the world as historically the US has been involved in backing Israel’s stance over nearly all thing, which included using its vetoing power to undermine any such resolutions from passing in the United Nations Assembly or the Security Council.
President Obama’s Israeli strategy has surprised many people but it seems to have irked his successor, Mr. Donald Trump, the most. Trump has vowed to support Israel in its future endeavors and has asked them to wait so that he can overturn the national policies that are not favoring Israel at the moment.
Israel seems to have been agitated against this resolution the most as it took some very hard steps after the passing of the resolutions which included calling back its ambassadors from some of the countries that were present in the vote and did not support Israel. Israel’s ambassadors to Senegal and New Zealand were summoned back and the Israeli Prime Minister’s office issued a statement where it vented out its anger against the resolution.
The statement said “”the Obama administration not only failed to protect Israel against this gang-up at the UN, it colluded with it behind the scenes”
The statement further added a message of support and its willingness to reciprocate the gesture Mr. Trump showed by supporting it, it said “”Israel looks forward to working with President-elect Trump and with all our friends in Congress, Republicans and Democrats alike, to negate the harmful effects of this absurd resolution.”
The UN resolution however was just seen as symbolic because it did not put any coercive measures against Israel in what was a mellowed response. Much awaited, this will still have far reaching ramifications, but the situation will only become clearer once Mr. Trump assumes his role at the White House on Jan 20th, 2017.
