Titans of the Silicon Valley Visit Mr. Trump

The power list to meet Mr. Trump includes some big names like Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos

“I am here to help,” Trump tells the Tech sector

Donald Trump, who in his run for the White House, continuously bashed tech companies like Apple and Amazon on their policies, was nowhere to be found on the 25th Floor of the Trump Tower.

Instead, the man who turned up there was a more mellow and welcoming person. The paradigm shift in Mr. Trump’s stance on how he convened the meeting with powerful people from the Silicon Valley which included Facebook CEO Sheryl Sandberg, Tim Cook of Apple, Larry Page and Eric Schmidt, Tesla’s Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos from Amazon, was a huge surprise for everyone.

Trump has receded on many of his hardline stances he had adopted during the Presidential Campaign, which included building a wall on the Mexican Border and stopping Muslim immigration. He is now being involved in all of these issues but with a softer and inclusive approach.

The people present in the meeting represented companies that have a combined market capitalization of $2.9 trillion, which made it a high stakes event. 5 of these companies are among the top 7 valued companies of the world as well. Trump seemed to acknowledge this fact as he said during the meeting that “This is truly an amazing group of people,” and even went to the extent of saying that “I want to add that I’m here to help you folks do well.”

During the meeting, Trump talked about lowering the corporate tax rate to 15% from the current 35% in order to allow the tech companies to bring back their money from overseas. The capital repatriation scheme was a core agenda of Trump’s campaign and it will help Tech companies in bringing profits from their overseas interests into the US and boost the economy.

“We have no formal chain of command around here,” Trump added as he indicated that he would be highly accessible to the tech arena if they ever need him to be there.

Antitrust laws, creating more jobs, improving education and protecting intellectual rights were among the core agendas of the meeting told by a person who had been briefed on the meeting but was not allowed to share it in public.

Mike Pence, the vice President-Elect, and tech investor Peter Thiel were also there. Thiel had been vocal in his support of Trump since he began his Presidential Campaign, marking a minority as most of the people in Silicon Valley were opposed to Trump.

A special highlight of the meeting was the consistently curious presence of Trump’s children Donald J, Ivanka, and Eric Trump. Also present was his son-in-law Jarod Kushner. This mixing of politics and office with his family has been an intriguing feature of Trump’s role as President.

Trump is going to meet Tesla and Space X Chief Elon Musk in a separate meeting later on the same day.
